For a friend -
Heres his two Kabuto but the question is, What do we make of these Sode? They are quite heavy - I tried to get the lacing and lining on the reverse. The "flames" appear to be lacquer. Any idea what these are? Edo Period or older pieces with Edo embellishments?

About the oosode. This is the style of the medieval sode, as a protection against arrows. These sode here are edo revival pieces. Very decorative but impractical and too heavy.
The first kabuto is a Yoshi style. Looking at the koshimaki and the large visible rivets the outside, I guess late edo.
The second kabuto, also made with old style elements, seems mid to late edo to me.

Let me add, that the sode are a typical Kaga work!
I also guess that these chrysanthemum shaped rivets on the second kabuto-hachi are probably later adornments.
