Japanese armor

Post by Luc Taelman »

A Japanese armor allways tells a story about a family, a region or a time era.

Dear all, please give us your thoughts about this armor. It was sold at Sotheby’s earlier this week

I like riddles.
Without looking in books and sort look, first to notice is the kawari kabuto, is that a saiga kamon?
The color of the helmet is different from the metalworks on the kote.
The helmeturushi looks like being restored but cant see well on this picture.
The type of kabuto seems to be inspired by a korean hat.
Mustache on the menpo, dont know if that is original to it, looking to the overall style.
The textile on fukigaeshi is late as well...

What do others see more?

Tokanmuri kabuto, tachi dō in hon kozane (true scales). Helmet is in sabi nuri urushi (lacquer made to look like russet iron), while kote (sleeves) are in black urushi. The haidate (thigh guards) seem to belong to the armour, but the nigu (kote and suneate (shin guards)) don't belong together because the kote are in the Oda style, while the suneate are shino.
