Considerations of Value

Post by John Wee Tom »

As collectors, we're often asked - and we often ask ourselves - about the thought process (if any!) we go through in deciding upon the nature and direction of our collection (i.e. what we want to collect and even the motivation(s) behind collecting); the focus of our collection (e.g. type (kabuto vs. menpo vs. full armours, etc; specific period or schools, etc.); how we go about deciding what and when to add to the collection; and inevitably, how to value the items in one's collection.

Sotheby's has broken down the valuation criteria into 10 components and has developed a short video series on each that I thought would interest our members and visitors. These criteria (and I don't think we're limited to only these) are important no matter what area of collecting one is interested in.

I've provided the link for the episode that deals with one of my own important criteria - Historical Importance - but click through the related links to see each episode.

Enjoy!

Indeed interesting insights!
It gives an idea how the (exorbitant) high prices, they sometimes estimate, be produced.
