Next Society Meeting November 2017: ko zunari kabuto
A warring states era helmet. Simple, effective and the start of a new view on personal protection on the battlefield.

Looking forward to read the meeting report. Could become a complement to the upcoming "Kabuto No Mikata" translation :ugeek:

Beautiful kabuto.
I would be very interested to know the characteristics of an early zunari and how to spot one.
How would a 16th zunari differ from a 17th century example?

First detail: 6 drillholes on top. Take care: it is easy to fake this on an edo zunari, and often done!

Luc, could you please elaborate what drill holes you mean?

This kabuto was sold on Yahoo Japan in 2013 by the way.

You can faintly see some of the holes in the picture if you look very closely (or maybe I can only because I know they're there!).

I understand, thanks. Actually I've never noticed this feature before.

You can clearly see the holes in this example taken at the small exhibition at Odawara castle, which comprises several pieces from one of the senior NKBKHK members.

Hello Luc, Do you have any idea of the purpose of the 6 drilled holes . I cannot think of any good reason for them unless possibly to secure a fitting for a kashiradate as worn by the Hosakawa in the form of pheasant feathers.Peter
