Dear Japanese Armor Enthusiast,

The world of Samurai Armor has always been a source of mystery for those interested in this fascinating field. Unlike with the study and appreciation of Nihonto – the fabled Japanese sword – publications, knowledge and formal associations of like-minded collectors, scholars, dealers, and fans of Japanese armor have been very few and far between, especially outside of Japan. Until now.

In April 2017, the Western branch of the Nihon Katchu Bugu Kenkyu Hozon Kai (also known as NKBKHK or The Association for the Research and Preservation of Japanese Helmets and Armor) was established, with the mandate of promoting interest, appreciation, study and scholarship of Japanese armor outside of Japan. In addition, this Western Branch – now known as the Japanese Armor Society or JAS – is geared towards growing an international membership base by providing its members an English website; translations of original NKBKHK newsletters and other publications; original newsletter content created by the JAS; access to NKBKHK-sponsored symposiums, exhibitions, kantei (where experts evaluate items for authenticity and quality) and events both within and outside of Japan; and most importantly, a network of enthusiastic, experienced and knowledgeable collectors, dealers and experts in Japanese armor willing to share their expertise. Of equal consideration for the JAS members is the certain cross-cultural exchange of knowledge, information and insights between the Western and mother branches of the NKBKHK.

I invite you to feed your interest in Japanese armor by joining the Japanese Armor Society today – and gain entry into an intriguing and exciting world of art, craftsmanship, aesthetics, history, symbolism and legend.
